THE POSSESSIONS - DELICIOUSLY CREEPY DEBUT

The Possessions by Sara Flannery Murphy

Published by: Harper

Genre: Mystery Thriller Fiction

Release date: February 7th 2017

In this electrifying literary debut, a young woman who channels the dead for a living crosses a dangerous line when she falls in love with one of her clients, whose wife died under mysterious circumstances

In an unnamed city, Eurydice works for the Elysian Society, a private service that allows grieving clients to reconnect with lost loved ones. She and her fellow workers, known as “bodies“, wear the discarded belongings of the dead and swallow pills called lotuses to summon their spirits—numbing their own minds and losing themselves in the process. Edie has been a body at the Elysian Society for five years, an unusual record. Her success is the result of careful detachment: she seeks refuge in the lotuses’ anesthetic effects and distances herself from making personal connections with her clients.

But when Edie channels Sylvia, the dead wife of recent widower Patrick Braddock, she becomes obsessed with the glamorous couple. Despite the murky circumstances surrounding Sylvia’s drowning, Edie breaks her own rules and pursues Patrick, moving deeper into his life and summoning Sylvia outside the Elysian Society’s walls.

After years of hiding beneath the lotuses’ dulling effect, Edie discovers that the lines between her own desires and those of Sylvia have begun to blur, and takes increasing risks to keep Patrick within her grasp. Suddenly, she finds her quiet life unraveling as she grapples not only with Sylvia’s growing influence and the questions surrounding her death, but with her own long-buried secrets.

A tale of desire and obsession, deceit and dark secrets that defies easy categorization, The Possessions is a seductive, absorbing page-turner that builds to a shattering, unforgettable conclusion.

REVIEW: GOLDEN SON BY PERCE BROWN

I'm starting new year with a bang. My first review in 2015 is of the book I read couple of weeks ago but still can't stop thinking about. It is completely spoiler-free so you can read it even if you haven't started this series yet (in such a case, I suggest you put everything aside and read first book Red Rising right now!)

Golden Son (Red Rising #2)
Written by: Pierce Brown
Published by: Del Rey

Purchase: Amazon / B&N / BD
Genre: Science Fiction / Fantasy

With shades of The Hunger Games, Ender’s Game, and Game of Thrones, debut author Pierce Brown’s genre-defying epic Red Rising hit the ground running and wasted no time becoming a sensation. Golden Son continues the stunning saga of Darrow, a rebel forged by tragedy, battling to lead his oppressed people to freedom from the overlords of a brutal elitist future built on lies. Now fully embedded among the Gold ruling class, Darrow continues his work to bring down Society from within. A life-or-death tale of vengeance with an unforgettable hero at its heart, Golden Son guarantees Pierce Brown’s continuing status as one of fiction’s most exciting new voices.

REVIEW: RED RISING BY PIERCE BROWN

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

(Red Rising Trilogy #1)

Published by: Del Rey

Genre: Sci-Fi / Dystopia

Release date: January 28th 2014

The Earth is dying. Darrow is a Red, a miner in the interior of Mars. His mission is to extract enough precious elements to one day tame the surface of the planet and allow humans to live on it. The Reds are humanity's last hope.

Or so it appears, until the day Darrow discovers it's all a lie. That Mars has been habitable - and inhabited - for generations, by a class of people calling themselves the Golds. A class of people who look down on Darrow and his fellows as slave labour, to be exploited and worked to death without a second thought.

Until the day that Darrow, with the help of a mysterious group of rebels, disguises himself as a Gold and infiltrates their command school, intent on taking down his oppressors from the inside. But the command school is a battlefield - and Darrow isn't the only student with an agenda.

MY REVIEW:

Wow, what a page-turner! I am impressed. Red Rising is outstanding debut novel by Pierce Brown, phenomenal introduction into new series and my personal new favorite of this year.

I'm not going to provide summary of this book. It would be too long and it wouldn't do this complex story justice. You need to read this book yourself, experience it all on your own without having any knowledge of storyline or spoilers. After all, this is kind of the book that, plot-wise, you should definitely go into blind. But what I can tell you is how this story made me feel, what kind of impression it left on me. And let me tell you, it affected me big time!

Red Rising is one of the most creative and captivating stories I have had the pleasure of reading. Its imaginary took my breath away and heart-stopping situations often left me in goose bumps. Moreover, world building is done perfectly. This great introduction into dystopian society will grab your attention from the first pages of this novel and its twists will keep you anxious and entertained till the very end.

Red Rising is story about death and sacrifice, about big dreams and broken ideals. It is story that most definitely won't let you indifferent. Power, freedom, justice, politics and loyalty. All these topics have been used countless times in the books before. ButPierce Brown gives them new shining, he shows them in his own singular light. And result is awe-inspiring and enthralling.

Most importantly, I can't forget to mention writing style. I absolutely loved how author managed to narrate this novel. It was straightforward, fast-paced and attention-grabbing. There was not a single thing I would not love about it and I can't recommend this book enough to all those who love great storytelling.

This novel shows us one thing. When you live for the dreams of others, you can easily lost your true self in the process. Will that be Darrow's fate? I already can't wait to read next instalment - Golden Son!

REVIEW: Donners of the Dead by Karina Halle

Donners of the Dead by Karina Halle

Genre: Historical, Horror, Romance

Purchase: Amazon / Smashwords

Synopsis:

***A Standalone Horror Romance coming February 2014***

A note about this book: Donners of the Dead is set in 1851 – couples were often thrust into marriage together with short courtships, racism was widespread and not overly frowned upon, and women had little to no rights. What wouldn't fly in today's day and age was unfortunately the norm back then - it is worth keeping that in mind when reading this book.

Jake McGraw was unlike anyone I’d ever known. He was brash, rude, unapologetic and arrogant; chauvinistic, close-minded, and terribly stubborn. He was built like a tree, tall with a hard chest and wide shoulders and hands that looked like they could wrestle a bear. He was a cigar-chomping, scruffy-faced, beast of a man. I was pretty sure I hated him. And I know he hated me. But among the flesh-eating monsters in these snow-capped mountains, he was the only thing keeping me alive

The year is 1851 and pioneers in search of California gold are still afraid to travel on the same route as the tragic Donner party did years before. When the last wagon train to go into the Sierra Nevada mountains fails to arrive at their destination, Eve Smith, an 18-year old half-native girl with immense tracking skills is brought along with the search party, headed by an enigmatic former Texas Ranger, Jake McGraw.

What they find deep in the dangerous snow-covered terrain is a terrifying consequence of cannibalism, giving new meaning to the term “monster.” While the search party is slowly picked off, one by one, Eve must learn to trust Jake, who harbors more than a few secrets of his own, in order to survive and prevent the monstrosities from reaching civilization.

***This is NOT New Adult***
THIS BOOK IS RECOMMENDED FOR MATURE READERS AUDIENCES ONLY. HOWEVER, THIS REVIEW ITSELF DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY INAPPROPRIATE MATERIAL.

My Jake and Eve:

* 5 STARS * Review:

18-years old half-native tracker girl and arrogant former Texas ranger. It’s 1851 when Eve and Jack, together with a group of poeple, set up on dangerous search expedition into the local cold mountains. If only they knew what kind of evil would be awaiting them...

I’m not sure how Karina Halle does it, but all her books are 100% movie material. This book is no exception. Historical romance, fascinating Indian’s legends, a lot of action and zombies. Donners of the Dead is without a doubt my new favourite!

Adventure; the best word to describe this book. Captivating and thrilling adventure, amazing and unique setting, strong and lovable female lead. You won’t be able to put this book down.

Fear and gore. Another words that come to my mind when I think of this book. My heart was racing whenever something dangerous and scary was happening. And I love that feeling of being completely immersed in the story, when everything else fades away. I was glad to find it while reading Donners of the Dead.

Jake McGraw is the best example of true alpha male. Skilled, powerful, fearless, confident and capable of protecting and taking care of woman in all ways that counts. I just love those silent (but passionate) types who always goes straight to the point, not caring what others think of them.

But most of all, I loved the tension between Jake and Eve. To create feel of anticipation, that is what Karina Halle excels at. There was no insta-love and I had this warm tingling whenever Jake and Eve were having their moments. So do not hesitate, and pick this standalone novel yourself. I highly recommend it!

"We’re still human even in the face of beasts, even with our lives at risk. When you’re close to death, love is sometimes the only thing that makes sense in life.”

REVIEW+INTERVIEW: Sempre:Redemption by J.M. Darhower

Sempre:Redemption by J.M. Darhower

(Forever Series #2)

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Purchase: Kindle / B&N / iBook

Synopsis:

In this thrilling and sexy follow-up to Sempre, two young lovers struggle to keep their relationship intact after they become deeply enmeshed in the dangerous mafia-run crime ring they once tried to overthrow.

Haven Antonelli and Carmine DeMarco have been through a lot. Haven was taken in by Carmine’s father, and with his family’s help, she escaped a gruesome fate. However, saving Haven from the dark intentions of a mafia family cost Carmine a steep price: he was forced to swear loyalty to them.

Now, still passionately in love, Carmine and Haven must face the fall-out of Carmine’s forced service, as Haven discovers terrifying secrets about the family that enslaved both her and her mother—and why she matters so much in this intricate web of lies.
My Haven and Carmine:

* 5 STARS * Review:

The world of mafia and loyalty to La Famiglia does not mix well with the love and emotions. Will be Carmine and Haven be able to survive the roughness of La Cosa Nostra?

I cried, I swooned, I laughed, I mourned, I was moment from heart attack... This book is pure brilliance and more than worthy sequel to Sempre!

I thought that I couldn't love and admire characters from previous instalment more that I did and I was most certainly wrong. I was inspired by Haven's strenght and ability to go on no matter what. I was fascinated by Carmine's unconditional and selfless love for Haven. I was touched by Vincent's determination to do anything for his loved ones. And I was surprised by my affection towards Corrado and my vehement need to see this deeply flawed man happy and at peace. Without the doubt I can say that Corrado and Carmine are one of the most interesting and fascinating characters ever written!

Nothing is just black and white in this book. There is good in bad people, as well as there is some bad in good people. And some people are purely evil. So whom to trust?

This is not just a love story. This is a message to all readers. Message about redemption and conscience, about honour and determination to live the best under given circumstances.

J.M. Darhower is a master in storytelling. Her characters come alive while you read her story and it is impossible not to be immersed in the world she creates. I love this series and recommend it to EVERYONE from bottom of my heart!

Interview With J.M. Darhower:

I was honoured to have a quick chat with J.M. Darhower, here is result:

* It is well known that you are huge fan of Godfather movies. What else inspired you to write Forever series?

It was my fascination with the Mafia and my passion about the subject of human trafficking that inspired the plot of Sempre and Sempre: Redemption. The two subjects have the same sort of themes to them that went together well. I wanted to write a story about love, and sacrifice, and redemption, and freedom… and explore the concept of what it truly means to be free.

* Now a though one. Who and why is your favourite character in Forever series?

Hmmm. I love so many different characters for so many different reasons, but I have to admit the one who gets under my skin the most is Corrado Moretti. I enjoyed writing him and exploring the mind of a character that is darker than most, who does what he does with no apologies (again, it's probably due in part to my Mafia fascination).

* Beside amazing Forever series, I also adore your book Extinguish. Do you prefer writing paranormal or contemporary stories?

I enjoy both, honestly, but I lean toward the contemporary. It feels more natural to me when I'm dealing with humans and exploring their motivations instead of delving into the paranormal and creating the unknown.

* What helps you to concentrate and gets you into the right mood for writing?

Music, usually… the tone of the music tends to influence what I'm writing, so whenever I need to get in a certain mood I just put on a song (the louder, the better).

* What is in store for your fans in the future? What can your readers look forward to?

I have some other stories in the works that I hope to have news about soon, including a new series that I think my readers will enjoy. Can't say much else about it right now except that some awesome things are definitely coming in the new year.

THIS BOOK IS RECOMMENDED FOR MATURE READERS AUDIENCES ONLY. HOWEVER, THIS REVIEW ITSELF DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY INAPPROPRIATE MATERIAL.

* 5 STARS * Review:

Ashes to Ashes was everything I was hoping for and some more! This next-to-last Experiment in Terror book is perfect mixture of funny banters, swooning moments, steamy scenes and extremely creepy situations! EIT fans most definitely won’t be disappointed.

Since I really missed Perry’s thoughts, I was eager to be back to her POV in this book. In Ashes to Ashes, everyone from Perry’s family is back in picture. Even Pippa and her creepy warnings that does not really make sense. Readers will witness plenty of personal confrontations as well as some serious discussions. But most of all, you are all going to be completely freaked out!

I admit, I was scared out of my mind reading this book. Dark haunted places with not so friendly ghosts can do that to you. I had goosebumps on various occasions and I will be avoiding dark vacated placed for a very long time after reading this book. Ashes to Ashes has without the doubt secured the title of the most scariest book of whole series to the date!

Once again, Karina Halle managed to hold my attention from the beginning to the end. Noone can bring up so many emotions the way Karina does with her writing. She kept the tension and excitement without creating forced drama - I have to applaud her for that. Moreover, her ability to include memorable and funny outliners in the most unexpected (yet fitting) situations is astonishing!

And the best thing about this book? Dex is still his charming-crude-sarcastic self. It’s amazing that even in the scariest situations, he is always able to make me laugh. I am so glad that author is keeping him the same. I just love him this way!

A lot of was resolved in this book, some things have been set into the motion and it is clear that series is slowly wrapping up. Believe me when I say that I am already psyched for final instalment of this superb series!

REVIEW: Hushed by Kelley York

Hushed by Kelley York

Genre: Contemporary Thriller

Release date: November 11th

Published by Entangled:Embrace

Synopsis:

Eighteen-year-old Archer couldn't protect his best friend, Vivian, from what happened when they were kids, so he's never stopped trying to protect her from everything else. It doesn't matter that Vivian only uses him when hopping from one toxic relationship to another - Archer is always there, waiting to be noticed.

Then along comes Evan, the only person who's ever cared about Archer without a single string attached. The harder he falls for Evan, the more Archer sees Vivian for the manipulative hot-mess she really is.

But Viv has her hooks in deep, and when she finds out about the murders Archer's committed and his relationship with Evan, she threatens to turn him in if she doesn't get what she wants... And what she wants is Evan's death, and for Archer to forfeit his last chance at redemption.

My Vivian, Archer and Evan:

  * 4.5 STARS * Review:

"To stay or let go. To keep going and see where his past decisions took him, or try grasping that second chance. Do monsters get second chances?"
Archer has always been a little bit obsessed with  his friend Vivian. He is determined to do anything for her, even kill people who hurt her in the past. Than he meets Evan, nice and shy guy. Archer quickly becomes fascinated with him, espcecially when he realizes that Evan is the only one who gives not just take from Archer. But can Archer ever overcome his obsession with Vivian and see her true colors?
"Didn't his heart have enough stitched and cracks to last a lifetime? Breaking, healing, breaking. And yet he put his trust in the few people that matterd, set himself up for being struck down again and again."
Hushed is unusual and extremely captivating book. It is harsh, dark and depressive story full of violence and conflicting feelings. But most importantly, this psychological thriller will leave you thinking about what happened for days!

It is very difficult to cathegorize this book, as it is difficult to describe Archer. A secluded kind of person, quite messed up with dark thoughts, intelligent but misunderstood by others, Archer makes very unusual but interesting narrator. He is not a hero in literal sense, nor he is villian. He was like a ticking bomb and I was waiting all the time for him to go off. He and his dark thoughts were what made this book a winner for me.

Those who are reluctant to read m/m story, I completely understand. I was avoiding this genre for a long time and decided to give this genre a chance only because it was supposed to be a "light" version. Since Hushed is intended for YA audience, nothing was too graphic and it all felt pretty natural to me as a m/m newbie.

Highly recommended if you are looking for something out of ordinary romance stories, yet still something intense and very emotional!

REVIEW+GIVEAWAY: Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia

Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia
Genre: Contemporary Adult Romance
Purchase: Amazon / B&N

Goodreads Blurb:

He counts her smiles every day and night at the train station. And morning and evening, the beautiful commuter acknowledges him—just like she does everyone else on the platform. But Blake Hartt is not like the others . . . he’s homeless. Memories of a broken childhood have robbed him of peace and twisted delusions into his soul. He stays secluded from the sun, sure the world would run from him in the harsh light of day.

Each day, Livia McHugh smiles politely and acknowledges her fellow commuters as she waits for the train to the city. She dismisses this kindness as nothing special, just like her. She’s the same as a million other girls—certainly no one to be cherished. But special or not, she smiles every day, never imagining that someone would rely on the simple gesture as if it were air to breathe.

When the moment comes that Livia must do more than smile, without hesitation she steps into the fray to defend the homeless man. And she's surprised to discover an inexplicable connection with her new friend. After danger subsides, their smiles become conversation. Their words usher in a friendship, which awakens something in each of them. But it’s not long before their bond must prove its strength. Entanglements from the past challenge both their love and their lives.

Blake’s heart beats for Livia’s, even if her hands have to keep its rhythm. Love is patient. Love is kind. Love never fails. Love never fails, right?

In an interwoven tale of unlikely loves and relationships forged by fire, Debra Anastasia takes readers into the darkest corners of human existence, only to show them the radiant power of pure adoration and true sacrifice. Complicated families and confused souls find their way to light in this novel, which manages to be racy, profane, funny, and reverent all at once.

* 5 STARS * Review:

"Us being in the same atmosphere is either a great cosmic catastrophe or the most serependitous rendezvous."
My Livia and Blake:

Everyday on her way to work, Livia smiles at everyone on the train station. The homeless man in the shadows is no exception. When the group of boys decide to bully and attack him Livia has to step up. And so begins her unusual friendship with beautiful homeless man.

Blake is haunted by demons from his past amd he prefers to be secluded from ordinary world. He lives for smiles and banters with lovely Livia. But soon, friendship is not enough for them and they cannot deny this intense pull between them.

But there are too many obstacles to overcome for them to be together and happy. Is love enough to face all the problems life presents them with?

It was clear from the very beginning that author invested a lot of time into creating supportive characters. I was fascinated by bound between Blake and his foster brothers. 3 different guys, 3 matching tattoos, 3 lives connected forever. Beckett and Cole would do anything to protect Blake and his fragile state of mind. Will be Blake's feelings for Livia his salvation or his undoing?

I quickly got to like Blake. He was different from ordinary book heroes. He may seem crazy to the outsiders but the truth is that he is contemplative, perceptive, gentleman and very fascinating young man.

Livia was always sweet and caring person, putting needs of others before hers own. But when someone was threatening her loved ones, she was the first one to defend them. I really loved her feisty nature.

However, for me, the biggest hero of this book was Beckett. He is guy with the biggest heart ever and extremely sacrificing when it comes to those he loves. I don't remember last time I had so much respect for some character. I cannot wait for his book Return to Poughkeepsie!

I love stories which are out of the norm and I love to be wowed when reading somehting unique and original. Poughkeepsie fits exactly into this category. I loved everything about it - characters, pacing, plotline. Debra Anastasia did excellent job writing this book. Just be prepared, this story deals with some heavy topics like abuse, mental illness and murders.

Poughkeepsie is beautiful and captivating story of 6 people, their lives, problems, hopes and dreams. This story touched my heart and I will never forget it!

My Review:

Oh My God, this was crazily fantastic!!! There are no doubts that Karina is amazing author. This book was full of surprises and I was seriously overwhelmed with all that happened in this book.

"And this fear, the fright that shattered my nerves and made my tongue buzz like metal, it was more real than any dream. Sometimes it was only the strongest, most palable terror that really made you feel alive."

After cliffhanger in Lying Season, I immediately started book 5. Things were pretty negative and depressive for Perry at the beginning, it seemed like plenty of bad and sad things were coming her way. It was breaking my heart to see Perry struggling with her life situations. And than she started losing her mind. Literally. Things got weird, creepy and she had noone to count on. Only Ada. Oh yes, Ada, the best sister in the world. I really liked her in this book, that is for sure.

Things were super freaky in On Demon Wings. All the ghost-possession-mind-losing stuff really scared me and I found most of the is very believable which made things for me even scarier. Everything felt more dangerous and creepier in this book, especially when Dex was not arround. I had scary goose bumps more often than during previous books in these series and On Demon Wings seriously gave me creeps.

So far I thought that Jennifer L. Armentrout is master of cliffhangers. But considering the one in this book, Karina definitely accomplished the level of I-have-to-read-next-book-like-now-otherwise-I-will-go-crazy with her cliffhanger. So seriously poeple, go and read these series!!!

Goodreads Blurb:

With the Experiment in Terror show finding some success, amateur ghost hunters Perry Palomino and Dex Foray embark on their most terrifying investigation yet. A tiny, fog-shrouded island in the rough strait between British Columbia and Washington State has held a dark secret for decades: It was a former leper colony where over forty souls were left to rot, die and bury each other. Now a functioning campground, Perry and Dex spend an isolated weekend there to investigate potential hauntings but as the duo quickly find out, there is more to fear on D’Arcy Island than just ghosts. The island quickly pits partner against partner, spiraling the pair into madness that serves to destroy their sanity, their relationship and their very lives.

My Review:

After falling in love with Perry & Dex and EIT series in previous books, I had pretty high expectation when I started reading Dead Sky Morning. And I am happy to say that my expectation were not just met, they were exceeded. I am officially huge fan of Experiment in Terror series!!!

So much has happened in this book. I liked that I got some "normal" stuff before heading towards actual adventure. Family problems, ice-hockey game, drunk talking...everything was there. And clown lady was in her creepiest-self. She always leaves me with more questions than answers but I kind of look forward to her appearences. I have a feeling that she may be a good character, but you can be sure with nothing in this series.

Dex was once again ridiculously charming. He was in his best mysterious-self, with plenty of absurd and snarky comments, always 1 step forward and 2 steps back considering his "relationship" with Perry. It made Perry feel confused, I was confused and I am sure other readers will be too. But Dex is what makes this book one of the most interesting and original book I have ever read. He can be sweet, crazy, perverted or caring. Sometimes I really did not know what to think, but I was definitely fascinated by it all.

And spooky level in this book? Well, I would go crazy if I was in Perry's and Dex's shoes. Everything about the hunted island gave me creeps. I did not like how it changed behaviour of Perry and Dex, but I could not blame them after everything they had to go through. Dead Sky Morning is the best but also the scariest part of this series so far.

Perry's feelings for Dex were in full mode in this book and I cannot wait what will happen in next instalment!!!
"I just loved the guy. I know I didn't know him that well - but I loved what I did know. And what I didn't know drove me crazy like some book that you can't stop reading, just to see how it ends, just to see if your hunches were right."
