DO YOU PRE-ORDER BOOKS?

The other day I was browsing my TBR list and looking up the forthcoming titles on Bookdepository. One thing led to another and I ended up pre-ordering some of my most awaited titles. Which got me thinking... do you guys pre-order books or not?

PHYSICAL COPY VS. E-BOOK

When it comes to pre-ordering, I pre-order only paperbacks or hardcovers, never ever e-books. Why? I prefer to have only unread ARCs or currently reading books on my kindle. Simply said, I like to keep my kindle library as organized as possible. I do regular clean ups of my kindle library and delete all read e-books except those I plan to re-read in the future. So if I want to read particular e-book now or in imminent future, I buy it now but I never pre-order it. Maybe this sounds weird to some of you, but that's how I roll :)

MONEY SAVING

The main reason behind my pre-orders is the fact that pre-ordered books are cheaper. If you pre-order, you always get a discount from 10% to 30%. And if you plan to buy this or that book anyway, why not to save up some money while doing so? Moreover, if you use Amazon, they have a "Pre-Order Price Guarantee". So if you order now and if the Amazon price decreases between your order time and the end of the day of the release date, you'll receive the lowest price. Isn't that fabulous?

BOOKSHELF OCD

Another reason for my decision to pre-order is visual part of my bookshelves. When I start collecting some series in print, I have to have all the books in series in the same edition, height and ideally even by the same publisher. I am OCD like that. One of my bookish worries is being unable to get all the books in series in the same height and edition. Believe me, the fear is real. It had happened to me before. I had hesitated with buying sequels and in meantime publisher pulled down the big format paperbacks and started to sell small mass market paperback editions. So whenever I buy first book in series, next instalments have to match. Hence my obsession with pre-ordering sequels so I do not miss out on getting the exact format that I want.

I don't really preorder books. I tend to wait and see if my library gets them in. I did preorder Obsidio though. I am in awe of how you keep your kindle!! I wish I was that good!!!

I was fed up with how long it always took to browse or find something in my kindle so I decided to implement drastic approach and delete most of books on my kindle one day LOL Now it is easy to keep it "clean" :)
I just ordered my first preorder ever. The book wasn’t very expensive, and I knew I’d have a hard time finding it used because it’s not being published in my country. Usually I only buy used books or scratch-and-dent books. I’m excited to get something brand new.

Oh, when it comes to backlist titles I always buy only used booksas well. They are so much cheaper, right? :) I pre-order only new books by favorite authors when I cannot wait to read them.

I've never actually pre-ordered before, mostly due to the fact that I live in South Africa so a lot of new releases only release much later here and even If I was to order on amazon it would take months because of customs etc, so its kind of pointless. I'm so with you on having unlatching series, it bugs me so much! I have that for my infernal devices series, the first book being normal sized and the last two, being tall but they're special editions so I don't mind too much, haha.

I feel you about Amazon, it takes ages for book to be delivered to my country by amazon as well. What about bookdepository.com? Have you tried it yet? They have better delivery dates in my opinion.

Ohh Time's Convert. Can't wait for that one!

I rarely pre-order books, to be honest. In fact, I don't think I have like ever. But I do share your obsession with completing a series, though. I get so extreme that it doesn't even matter if I end up hating the series. I just need to have them all. Lol.

Yay, it is so nice to meet someone who shares and understands my obsession with completing series :)
If I read an ARC and loved it, I'll definitely pre-order the book. I'll also pre-order a book if it is part of a series I'm currently reading. I also only order paperbacks (if they're available). If a paperback copy isn't available, I usually wait until one is, which cuts back on what I can pre-order. Shelf space!

I prefer paperbacks as well. But sometimes, I am just not patient enough and buy hardcover because I simply cannot wait any longer for paperback release :D
This is true! I would much rather have a hardcover than an ebook!
Funny, I'm the opposite. I never preorder physical books, but I do preorder ebooks sometimes. Mostly I do it for books in series I love. But occasionally I'll do it for a new series or something cuz it's cheaper, like you said. And my kindle is kind of a mess, so I don't have to worry about that, haha.

As long as you can navigate your kindle it is okay :) I couldn't find anything and it was driving me crazy LOL
I had NEVER pre-order anything in my life until I pre-order Dread Nation. OMG I WOULD like to order all three books you have here! I love anything witchy or Red Rising and Tim's Convert looks so good!

Yay, you are Red Rising fan as well? I adore the whole series :)
I never used to preorder but now I do a LOT more because I know it also really helps authors!! The numbers give publishers good indications that the author is loved and it might help them get more deals, and I'm aaaall for supporting my faves. 😍 I just preordered White Rabbit by Caleb Roehrig and also Leah on the Offbeat!

I am all for supporting and helping my favorite authors as well! Authors need plenty of love, right?
I DIDN'T KNOW PRE-ORDERING WAS CHEAPER?!? Personally I don't pre-order since my I still have this weird-ass fear of using my credit card, and I hate the feeling of buying something without my parents knowing. I am still a student, after all. T_T

Yeah, I never pre-ordered as student as well. But for the future, amazon and bookdepository almost always give 10% or 20% off the price if you pre-order which is great!
This year I pre-order a book for the first time ever! I decided to pamper myself and went with a hardcover and I am starting it now and I feel a little down because I learned something about the author that I didn't like :(

I totally hear you about the bookshelf appearance! Great post!

Thanks Daniela! And sorry for a disappointment with the author, it sucks but I get affected by real life behaviour of authors as well...
I don't pre-order books. I think I've only ever pre-ordered one book and that was the last book in Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series. LoL I don't really have the space for a ton of books. More times than not I end up just purchasing a used book or borrowing it from the library.
There are certain authors that are an auto-buy for me, so I'll almost always pre-order their books. Like you said, if I'm going to buy it eventually anyways, why not get it when it's cheaper? I prefer physical copies and paperbacks to ebooks. I feel like ebooks get lost on my iPad and I stumble across them randomly. Plus, I love holding books in my hand.

Okay, so I've never actually pre-ordered a book (with the exception of the Harry Potter series) but after having read this post I totally will! I always get suckered into the higher prices. AND I totally understand what you mean with the edition OCD. I have searched so many second hand stores to get my hands on the editions that I want!
